This page provides all the necessary information that you might need regarding the footpaths/Rights of Way in Sussex.

The footpaths of Sussex are the resposnsibility of the local councils that cover the area where the footpaths are located.  You can find out about how the councils monitor, maintain and improve their footpaths by visiting the appropriate website.

Footpaths in the East Sussex area:                                           East Sussex County Council

Footpaths in the West Sussex area:                                          West Sussex County Council

Footpaths specific to the City of Brighton and Hove:       Brighton and Hove City Council

Reporting Path Problems

If you come across any problems with Stiles, Gates, Bridges or Sign Posts, please inform the appropriate member below with as much information as possible including ideally the grid reference so that the Local Authority can be notified. If you are carrying a camera, a photograph featuring the problem would be ideal otherwise a comprehensive description should be given.

Alternatively you can report directly to the appropriate authority.   Open Access areas in the South Downs National Park (SDNP) are the responsibility of the SDNP Authority, whilst Open Access outside the National Park remain in the control of the County / City Councils.  

If you report any problems directly, please copy details to the appropriate Ramblers representative to enable follow up actions to occur.
