New walk leaders planning meeting - Thursday 14th September @ 7.30pm

A reminder that the New Walk Leaders Planning Meeting is just 2 weeks away so still time to register your interest to come along and find out from current walk leaders what it takes to lead a walk. It will be an informative evening but also a lot of fun helped along with food and refreshments. Current walk leaders are, of course, very welcome to attend and share their knowledge and experience.

So, your first test will be to get to the Stoneham Pub, Hove. If you can do this then you're half way to becoming a walk leader!!

Hope to see you there!

Hi Bridget,

Really enjoyable evening and thanks for your help. This is what I posted on MeetUp:

Firstly, many thanks for helping to make this evening a really positive, constructive and fun event. It was reassuring to see so many people wanting to contribute time and energy to an activity which gives us all such great pleasure. Thank you.

The feedback I got from those of you thinking of becoming a walk leader was as follows:

  1. Where can I find walks to do? There are lots of online resources available which are listed in the FAQ handout but one of the best is the Ramblers website which has lots of walks downloaded by members. This link will take you to ready-made walks in and around Brighton & Sussex: https://goo.gl/AZxM5A. I will investigate if it is possible to have a section on the BAHR and/or MeetUp sites for members' walks.

  2. I would be useful to have map reading training: I will look into setting this up either with a third party such as an outward bound company or, probably better, using our own resources. The OS has some useful guides: https://goo.gl/BIY5FX.

If you already have a walk(s) in mind but would like to try it out with a walk leader I suggest you post an announcement on BAHR and/or MeetUp. Another good way is to buddy up with another potential walk leader - it's fun and a good learning experience. I'll also contact current walk leaders to post announcements of walks they are planning to recce which you can tag along on.

Once again many thanks for help and co-operation and, of course, feel free to chip in with any comments and advice.

A big thank you to the Organisers and Walk Leaders who gave up their time last night. It was an informative evening and I enjoyed meeting them and hearing about their experiences. Mission accomplished and I hope most of us were pursuaded to lead at least one walk.
