Terry and Wendy lead 12 wind-blown members of Brighton and Hove Ramblers from Firle up and along the Downs on a blustery, six miles circular walk on 5th August.  The views were great.  And there were no blues amongst this happy band.
On the north facing slope, sheltered somewhat from the 20mph southern wind, there were dozens and dozens of blues though: Chalkhill blue butterflies - our largest blue butterfly.9916738477?profile=original
This male was somewhat battered, perhaps by the wind.  August is a peak month to see this butterfly before their numbers decline as the average last sighting in Sussex is 25 September*.

It was Wendy, who was the first to spot our County flower: "The Pride of Sussex", The Round-headed rampion.
There were lots on the trackside and a joy to see.
